10 "Do Something" Things
“We have a ‘strategic plan.’ It’s called doing things.” Herb Kelleher
I have always loved this quote from the CEO of Southwest Airlines for its simplicity and practicality. So much of the time it's easier to analyze than to do. Southwest is known for its "do something" sense of urgency, and, quite frankly, I want to be known for that as well. So as I enter my "calendar-challenged" week, I've been thinking about the things that I need to "do" that are simple, yet important. None of them require much explanation, so I'll keep it quick.
See if any of these register with you.
#1 - Focus (wait - let me go look for a quote on focus, but first, I'll let the dog in, then make some tea, then see if the kids are asleep, then check e-mail, followed by a hunt for something sweet to dip into my tea. Oh wait! My tea is cold; I better microwave it.) Where was I?
#2 - In the legendary words from Glengarry Glen Ross - A-B-C - Always Be Closing (the picture is from a work award of the same name!)
#3 - Don't fight City Hall, aka - "Pick your battles" - because sometimes the "winning" option isn't so great.
#4 - Invest in people. They are worth it. Every. Time.
#5 - Enjoy the view (I've said it before!) - it's amazing!
#6 - Expect problems and delays. No one's promised a smooth ride.
#7 - Find humor and patience in the ridiculousness (this helps with #6, above, and with a six-hour meeting, below)
#8 - Be grateful for the blessings (including the food!).
#9 - Be creative, even if it means putting your feet up on the desk!
# 10 Check-in often, hurry home, and be present when you're there.
Simple things to do - just not always easy. Have a great week!
