Dining Out: Paper Mill Grill
I recently met the restaurant owner of a popular place in Roswell who was in the hunt for opening a second location. When I suggested he make the move to East Cobb, he admitted the market potential, but he said he wouldn't go there because, "there's no interesting real estate." Apparently strip mall dining has limited appeal. I get it.
However there's one little parcel on Johnson Ferry Road, Paper Mill Village, which is better than your average line-up of retail shops. Thankfully, Eric Ottensmeyer (formerly of Leon's Full Service in Decatur) saw the potential and decided to bring his skills and open Paper Mill Grill.
I've been stopping by over the past few weeks to sample their menu, and I'm very excited by what I've seen (and tasted).
So far my favorite lunch option is the Turkey Sandwich which has a healthy layer of avocado (duh!) and a slaw which isn't bitter at all. The chipotle mayo is lightly used and the seven grain bread doesn't make me feel I'm on carb overload.
I LOVE this option!
The slow-cooked brisket is also tasty, but with the cheese and fries, this will induce a midday nap for me. Still, if you can take it, your taste buds will be happy! Of course, if you REALLY want a nap, indulge in the Mac & Cheese made with what the menu calls oozy Gruyère and crunchy pork. The serving size is small, but so crazy rich it's best to share.Any good neighborhood joint should serve a traditional cod Fish & Chips. This version is made with sweetwater 420 batter and has perfectly fried "chips." A delicious dinner option which makes me wish I liked beer. From the "I wasn't expecting this greatness" category comes the Tortellini with ricotta. These five beauties are served with a "ratatouille" of eggplant, squash, and red pepper which fooled my kids into thinking veggies were yummy.
The Fried calamari was similarly solid as it was topped with bbq sauce and pickled peppers.
Salad was the only evidence that the kitchen is still working out the kinks as mine showed up with far too much dressing. A forgivable rookie mistake.
We have yet to sample the desserts, but I'll report back when I have a few of those under my belt! In the meantime, be sure to check out Paper Mill Grill and welcome them to the neighborhood!
