Random Learnings Part 3
I've been collecting random learnings, but since it's been awhile since I've posted on that topic (here is Part 1 and Part 2), I thought you'd all enjoy some morning fun. See if any of these are news to you. Wikipedia trick - My friend Daley Hake tweeted this fact earlier this week and sure enough, it (mostly) works. I've heard of one or two topics where this falls apart, but the exercise was fascinating!
Red Solo Cup - Did you know that the lines on the cup actually have meaning? No? Me neither! The segments are "pour lines" for the kind of drink you're having. I'm still looking for the line that guarantees your Diet Coke won't overflow.Starbucks - When you order your coffee or tea in Canada, the Barista hands you your drink without a top. Lids to the drinks are found where the milk/sugar/stir sticks are located. This strikes me as MUCH more efficient than putting the lid off and on. When I asked my local US Starbucks peeps about this, they said they are REQUIRED to put the lid on. They speculated it was driven by a fear of a lawsuit in the event of a spill. Hmmm. Kosher Salt - If you cook much, you are probably familiar with this larger grain, more flavorful salt. For years I thought the salt was called Kosher because, like other "kosher" foods, it was prepared according to the rules in the Torah. As it turns out, that's generally not the case. Kosher salt has that name because it is USED in the process to make meat kosher. (I heard you say "huh" just now!) If you want to make sure that your salt has been prepared according to the religious rules, you have to look for the little u in a circle. Waffle House Locator - Are you craving some hash browns scattered, smothered, and covered? If you're not near an off-ramp and can't SEE a Waffle House, then you can send a text message to 562283 and get the nearest location. Look at The House being all hi-tech!!
Lego Trivia - Apparently there are 400 BILLION Lego pieces in the world today. Theoretically, that's enough for 62 bricks per person. (Learn more here) However, if you back out the number of bricks the Phenix family has squirreled away in buckets, between couch cushions, and buried in the backyard, that number probably drops to a dozen per person.
Ferns as Food - Have you ever heard of a "Fiddle head"? These are specific ferns whose tips are used as a vegetable. I first had them at the River Cafe in Calgary. They are delicious and only available seasonally. If you ever see them on a menu, be sure to try them!
As an aside - if you click on the Wikipedia link above for "Fiddle head," in 10 clicks you end up on Philosophy! The circle is complete.
Enjoy your day!
